WoW gold supplers resort to virtual corpse spam

World of Warcraft is undoubtedly the most popular MMO ever released with over 11 million people around the world regularly logging on. With that popularity also comes the undesirable services, the most prominent of which being gold sellers. These people farm gold and then sell it on to players allowing them to progress with less of the grind.

The problem that gold sellers have though, is getting noticed and getting players to visit their websites to purchase the gold. Blizzard will ban any accounts advertising gold selling services and just shouting the details in a town or city square doesn’t get the seller much attention past the few hundred players who may be around and not ignoring them. But now a new way of advertising has been discovered, although it takes a lot of work to achieve the desired result.

The technique is called virtual corpse spam and sees player corpses laid out on the ground in such a way as to spell out words. If done correctly the URL to visit to buy wow gold is a very noticeable blot on the World of warcraft landscape and something players cannot miss. In fact the website may be visited by the uninitiated just to see what is there unaware it is a gold seller attempting to make some cash.

Although amusing to the onlooker that someone would spend so much time creating a word out of dead players; it usually involves several hacked accounts of legitimate players.

If you play WoW and see such an event taking place it’s probably worth reporting it as the culprit may be tracked down while in the act.

Matthew’s Opinion

I doubt this corpse spam advertising will carry on for much longer mainly because it must take them ages to write out words and it only takes one mistake to make it fail. It’s also quite difficult to get a short URL now because most of them are taken so unless a gold seller already has a short URL they are going to have to spend more time laying corpses. However, services like bit.ly may help in that regard.

I’ve never understood players wanting to use gold sellers and cheat the game. I thought the point of games was the enjoyment of playing and progressing, not bypassing gameplay to get to the next level. I suppose if the grind becomes too much then buying wow gold is tempting, but personally I see that as the point at which you cancel a subscription and move on to another title.

Has anyone seen this virtual corpse spam in WoW? And has it ever led you to buy some gold?
